>Phuc Le

Focusing on social structures, mainly human connections and relationships that exist in my multi-faceted consciousness, I make photographic prints through a performative approach towards portraiture—utilizing a combination of analog and digital photography. Being part participant and part observer, I explore the limbo space between an insider and an outsider of cultures, gender, and systems. Though my work is ever evolving in ideas and media-of-practice, I'm presently fixated on: technology in relation to sub-communities, the collective formation of a New-American identity, and trending culture in mainstream and underground media. Born in Vietnam (1985) and developed in Orange County/Los Angeles, I'm currently living and producing work in LA and NYC.

Expedition: Southwest came out of the notion that a new cultural identity is able to establish without assimilating to an existing group of people.  For Le, the approval from the land holds more validity than the approval of any hegemonic group.  As he journey out on road-expeditions in hope of understanding the regional landmass that he calls home and creating myths in the manners of Darwin and Lewis & Clark, Le projects himself onto unyielding landscapes of the American southwest.
